Our History
In 1855, the Franklin Lakes United Methodist Church was incorporated. The Rev. T.S. Haggerty became the first official pastor in 1868. In the 1850’s the congregation met in the straw thatch roofed barn owned by Mr. John Lozier. Until 1868, they were served by a Methodist circuit rider.
In 1855, church ground was purchased from Mr. Harry Sturr and in 1856 the church was dedicated. In 1898, the Rev. William Jackson was appointed to the church and in 1907 the parsonage was purchased. For a time, the Rev. Jackson served as the Postmaster for the village, the parsonage back porch serving as his office.
In 1917, Mr. William V. Pulis offered the church free light for five years if the church would provide the wiring. In 1919, a fire destroyed the church building and the congregation gathered in the Public School Building until 1921. That year, the stone sanctuary was built on the present site and dedicated. In 1968, the current sanctuary was dedicated.

Member Testimonials
FLUMC is a warm caring church. Our Pastor and members instill faith, belonging and sense of family caring for one another. It is easy to make lasting friendships, grow in faith and become involved with church and community outreach.

I grew up in this church, literally. My parents found this church when they were expecting me, and so we attended as a family and haven’t looked back. Participation in church school, youth fellowship, confirmation, and singing in the choir has brought me not only joy but a sense of belonging. People that have attended over the years all seem to have the same reaction, a feeling of warmth and being welcomed with open arms. I am proud to be a member here, and I think you will find the caring and compassionate nature of others here as well.

We joined this wonderful FLUMC community with our daughters over 24 years ago and really enjoy being part of this church family. There are so many ways to get involved. We enjoy our date night at the Old Stone Coffee House, gardening in our garden that benefits the CUMAC food pantry, and singing in the church choir.

I love Franklin Lakes UMC for what brought me here 40 years ago: Kindness. Kindness you can see and feel starting with Pastor JongIn and running through everything we do for the glory of God. Kindness that delivers for me an inner peace promised in the love for all inherent in the Methodist creed of open hearts, open minds and open doors. I thank God every day in my prayers for leading me and my family to this beautiful place.

After attending services for a few weeks, I knew I had found a new church home. I felt so welcomed and immediately became involved in church activities and outreach including volunteering at CUMAC, organizing collections of food, clothing, school supplies, diapers and Christmas gifts for CUMAC, delivering Meals on Wheels, helping with the community garden, playing in the handbell choir, serving as a liturgist, serving as Ad Council Secretary and Community Connections co-chair. I am so grateful for everything that I have in my life and volunteering through FLUMC is a way to give back, to help others and hopefully make a positive difference in somebody else’s life. My faith has deepened and grown since coming to FLUMC and I am glad to have found such a loving and supportive church family.

My years associated with FLUMC started the day I was baptized. I grew up with a wonderful congregation and children. There was always something special happening and a fantastic nursery school for learning. I made my confirmation and participated in the MYF. I got married here, the first one in the new church. I always plan a visit when visiting the area. God Bless this church and the youth group my sons grew up with. Wonderful memories.
